2008 High School Swimming Update

Our growth as an association has been impressive over the years.   We are fortunate to have had the YMCA as a partner in our quest to bring high school swimming to the Treasure Valley.   Without the YMCA, high school swimming in Idaho would not exist.  Every year we look to what changes can be made to improve our program.  This year we anticipate dealing with a record number of participants, and a nine week regular season schedule that allows each team to swim five meets before District and State.

Meet Format

We will be swimming two tri-meets each Tuesday.  Teams will still get 5 meets, but may swim against the same team twice during the course of the season.  We will need to start the meets on time, and will need the cooperation of all coaches, swimmers and volunteers to keep the meet running smoothly.  Our goal is to start at 5:00pm and be finished by 8:00pm.  We were able to do this last year.

All teams may enter 3 swimmers in each event, and 6 swimmers in the 50 free.  We will swim the girls in the first tri-meet in heat one, and the girls in the second tri-meet in heat 2.  The boys will follow the same procedure.  There will be an additional heat of the 50 free for both girls and boys.  Teams will still be allowed to enter 4 per event at District and State.  At dual meets, we will add a “C” relay in the 200 Free and Medley Relays, but not in the 400 Free.   500 free swimmers must be able to swim the event in less than 8 minutes and will be seeded in dual meets with a time.  This will be a combined event.  Coaches need to run time trials at practice to make certain that the swimmers meet the time standard.  Saturday morning is also available to run time trials.

We will still combine relays. Teams must forward their entry file to Ann Costello the Monday before each meet, before 9:00p.m.  You can still make swimmer changes until the whistle blows the event closed. This makes the computer and scoring go so much faster.  If you do not understand this program, please call Ann at 362-5622.  All entries for District and State must be submitted via Meet Manager.

We will be using lanes 1-9 at all meets, and each team will be responsible for providing 3 timers and one marshal for the duration of each meet.  Teams will also be responsible for providing 2 officials at each meet.  The host team will provide the head timer, card runners and be responsible for set-up and take down.

Lane 10 will be open for warm-up and cool down, and will be supervised by a meet marshal.  We will put in an extra lane-line to separate lanes 9 and 10.  We ask that this lane is used strictly for its intended purpose, and not for socializing.  If this is abused, the lane will be closed during the meet.

Team Size

Once again, we are limiting teams to a maximum of 40 swimmers. This is a safety issue because of limited lane space available.  Please have your rosters set at 40 (or less) by the first regular practice, August 18th.  Please hold try-outs the week of August 11. If the sport becomes sanctioned, teams may be required to have even smaller numbers, so it is wise to start managing numbers now.

Practice Schedule

The Y has worked out a system at the front desk for swimmers to check-in, eliminating cards Please give a roster of your team to Michael (W YMCA) or Jad (DT YMCA) by August 15.  You can add names at a later date.  Remember, all swimmers must have completed registration and paid TVHSS fees to you before they are allowed to practice.  The YMCA fees are due September 2.
